The trials and tribulations of wash day.

No one will speak the truth so I guess I'll air it out...why does wash day feel like Jon Snow at the Battle of the Bastards? Wash day feels like Captain America looking at Thanos' army in Avengers Endgame before the gang started rolling out them gotdamn portals. Wash day might as well be classified as an Olympic sport for Black women and girls! I mean the sheer amount of energy exerted during this process has to be honored with a medal or a Target gift card at least! Every woman has a unique wash day routine, but the journey of wash day for a black woman with natural hair is a different experience.

Now, let me walk you through my wash day process. You should know, I have always had a lot of hair and it is extremely thick so my wash day steps include:

  • Pre-shampoo/detangle dry hair with hair oil

  • Shampoo (twice for good measure because for all the emotional turmoil I face, I better not see a speck of dirt)

  • Protein or hydration hair treatment

  • Deep Condition (to restore moisture)

  • Rinse (underrated terror of wash day)

  • Section hair (again...underatted terror of wash day)

  • Detangle (wet hair) AGAIN

  • Moisturize using the Liquid Oil Cream (LOC) or LCO method

  • Blowdry (optional but I wear my hair natural and I also wear wigs so this happens on low heat cuz we're too grown for heat damage)

  • Protective style or style

As you can imagine, I could start my wash day at 4 in the afternoon and finish at 11 at night because the time it takes a woman to wash their hair really depends on how much hair they have and how thick/dense their hair is. My hair is thick like a brillo pad or some shit so simple things like wetting my hair that you would think should take no time at all literally take a good amount of time to complete. Then you factor in the time it takes to wash my hair, and I am one of those women who washes my hair in sections...twice...to really cleanse my scalp. So, when I finally get down to blow drying my hair...my patience is at zero. Everything is annoying at this point, the blowdryer was sent from hell, my hands feel and look like raisins, and my neck is stiff. I want all the smoke but peep this...the hair STILL NEEDS TO BE STYLED OR BRAIDED so I'm sitting in the middle of my floor like...

Needless to say for all that pain and suffering there are a few hair products that are my tried and true favs that get me through this process it every time. I'm featuring them directly below in case you all want to try them out! I've included links on where to find them as well. Happy wash day ladies (wine and snacks also help)!
