Ard, I'm dragging it. I'm definitely not the last black girl in San Francisco, California but damn if it doesn't feel like it. I gathered you all here today to talk about the idea of community in people. It's so important for BLACK PEOPLE to have groups filled with people that look like them, share similar interest, and go through the same experiences that they do to turn too. I, unfortunately, have not found that group and let me tell you...this shit fucking sucks. It is most apparent to me now how much I need it now that I'm in this space in my life where my shit is far from together.
I got a chance to hang out with my friend from high school, Caleb, who also moved to the West Coast after graduation and we both came to the same conclusion that there are no black people in Northern California. IT CAN'T BE. Or rather, there aren't any readily available to us which is basically the same thing to our dramatic southern asses. Coming from Dekalb county Georgia, WE WERE SPOILED. You find very few places like Atlanta that are filled with community and I feel like we are realizing that a little bit too late. Like who even told us to move out here in the first place LMAOOOOMINDYOURBUSINESSOOOOOOO.
And for people that will say, "well why don't you two just hang out with each other?" first off, shut your as up. We don't live near each other. End of discussion.
Now, I've been to a few events – concerts, art galleries, festivals in Oakland that did give me a sprinkle of Black but damn near not enough to make me feel at ease. Maybe I could utilize FB more to figure out events I should be at or try to be more aware on social media to find other Black folks in my area (LOL), idk. All I know is that this isn't good for my mental health or my spirit to not have my own black sanctuary. Ya dig?
