Where do I begin? Travis Scott released his highly anticipated album, ASTROWORLD, early August. I could end the post right here and tell you that it slaps severely and it's one of the best albums I've heard this year but you came here to read my thoughts so let's get into it.
Besides Butterfly Effect and Watch featuring Lil Uzi Vert and Kanye West, we hadn't heard anything else from this album prior to it dropping which is hard to do now in the current music industry. I, like many others, was expecting Travis's usual fire ass productions and melodic sounds but ASTROWORLD exceeds expectations. ASTROWORLD has a 17 song tracklist with features from Frank Ocean, Drake, Stevie Wonder, The Weeknd, Quavo, Takeoff, Swae Lee, Gunna, Nav, 21 Savage, and Don Toliver. ASTROWORLD and other albums are following a trend of not showing the features on the tracklist which is aggravating and genius at the same time. We want to know who a artist collaborated with so we can prepare ourselves for the music. Artist are robbing us of that but it's genius because now you're either forced to listen to the whole thing or skip around through each song. AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU GON HEAR IT LMAO.
ASTROWORLD opens with STARGAZING which is a ode to how crazy a trip drugs take you on. Then it transitions into CAROUSEL featuring Frank Ocean. I couldn't tell you how surprised I was to hear Frank seeing as how he disappears and reappears when he wants. He sounded lovely as usual. SICKO MODE follows and the big dawg from the 6, AUBREY, DRAKE, opens this track. I didn't know I needed to hear the Travis x Drake combo as much as I did until then. SICKO MODE switches the beat and is still hard as fuck. One of the main stand out tracks on the album. STOP TRYING TO BE GOD was another stand out track for me on ASTROWORLD as Stevie Wonder's harmonica made my eyes water. I thought the combination of Kid Cudi and James Blake was perfect for the song. 5% TINT is my favorite song on the album. It's something about a Goodie Mob sample that excites the Georgia peach in me, I can't explain it. Travis raps over the Cell Therapy beat like only he can with a Texas ass bravado. I fucking love it. My second favorite song on the album is YOSEMITE. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know it's basically the same as Gunna's Sold Out Dates but I don't really care. The song is mesmerizing as Gunna delivers a flawless chorus with Travis using the same flow to deliver his verses later on. COFFEE BEAN closes ASTROWORLD and it's a pleasant surprise from what we usually hear from Travis. It's an introspective song about his relationship with his girlfriend and baby muva, Kylie Jenner. I honestly loved hearing this side of Travis and the production of the song is immaculate.
Honestly, you just need to listen to the whole album to figure out which songs move your soul and snatches your ear. I guarantee you'll find at least a couple of songs you like off the entire album. I just discussed some of my favs off the album and I'm not saying they're the best songs because music is personal and subjective. I'm not gon hold you, ASTROWORLD is one of the best albums of 2018.
